Ronnie Roberts (Updated May 2009)
Ronnie tuning up at The Mayflower
Ronnie playing at The Mayflower
With great sadness I have to report that Ronnie passed away unexpectedly on Easter Monday, 13th April, he was 58.
The funeral was held in the Central Chapel at Landican on Thursday 23rd April at 1:30pm.
Ron went to Rock Ferry High and then to Keele University where he studied law. I'm told that Ron's favourite song was by Little Feet. He was a life-long Tranmere Rovers supporter. His daughter, Dawn, would play French Lessons songs during their car journeys to away games. Ron got his first guitar when he was 13 and went on to play a right-handed Fender Stratocaster strung left-handed with Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings. He played through a Selmer Thunderbird Twin 50 and later a Peavey 212 Combo.
I hope Ron's now playing in Lowell George's latest band.
Updates (May 2009)
All the tracks from Homework and Reel Music are now available from the downloads page. I've also started to build a list of the French Lessons original songs.
There's now an entry on Last FM for French Lessons though it is also picking up scrobbled language courses.
We're looking for:
- the person who threw the first bottle at the Battle of the Bands in Birmingham
- the guy who guided Graham into the parked car at York University
- the taxi driver who took Steve Cumberlidge, as he asked, to Canning Town (south of the river) and then realised he meant Campden Town (north of the river). The trip cost him £15 to the south of the river, plus £15 to get him back north of the river. (The original journey would have cost him 75p from where he started). Now we should mention Steve's interest in money and his attachment to it, particularly with regard to needless trips and the high cost of getting back where you started from
- The police officer who had to open the briefcase containing the EDP Wasp synthesiser that we left in the Dale Inn car park at the height of the IRA bombings
- The guy who found, and returned to us, the Stratocaster we left in the Black Horse car park
- Any male toilet user who was on the receiving end of Andy (Bing) Crosby's penchant for nicking Robbie's Wasp Synth and taking it to a cubicle in the gents bog. Here he would set up the most blood curdling wet fart noises and just let rip when anyone came in
- survivors of any of the fights at the Shepherd's Rest
